Bilbo wins the final riddle (asking what he has in his pocket). Gollum realizes he has lost his "Precious" (the ring). He chases Bilbo, but Bilbo accidentally slips the ring on his finger. He discovers he is invisible. He pities Gollum and leaps over him, escaping the tunnels. Outside, he reunites with Gandalf and the dwarves, keeping the ring a secret.

After fleeing Orc scouts via a hidden pass, the company finds refuge in Rivendell. While Elrond deciphers the map, Gandalf secretly meets with Galadriel, Saruman, and Elrond to discuss the Morgul blade and the threat at Dol Guldur.

The group arrives at the hidden valley of Rivendell, home of the Elves. They meet Lord Elrond. The Elves provide food and shelter. Elrond examines the map and reveals the existence of "Moon-letters"—secret writing visible only under the same moon that wrote them. The letters reveal the keyhole to the secret door will appear when the last light of Durin's Day (the Dwarven New Year) shines upon it.
