Mitos Sisifus is a philosophical essay by the French-Algerian writer and thinker Albert Camus. First published in French in 1942 as Le Mythe de Sisyphe , the book serves as the foundation for Camus's philosophy of the absurd. At its heart, the book grapples with a single, profound question: "There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide". Camus argues that human life is inherently "absurd"—a product of the clash between our deep desire for meaning, order, and clarity and the universe's silent, indifferent, and irrational nature. Instead of despair, however, Camus advocates for revolt : a defiant embrace of life despite its meaninglessness.
The essay is divided into four chapters, each building a logical argument toward its startling conclusion.

Camus explores how artistic creation can be an authentic response to the Absurd. He argues that the novel — and by extension all art — is the perfect medium for absurd expression precisely because it makes no claims to ultimate truth or revelation. The novelist creates a world knowing it is artificial, that his characters are inventions, and that his work will ultimately be forgotten. Yet he creates with passion and discipline, finding meaning in the creative act itself.
