To understand their subjects, they brought in an ichthyologist to give lectures and went on snorkeling trips to immerse themselves in the underwater world they were tasked with depicting. Their research was so thorough that they had to deliberately tone down the realism in some areas to ensure the fish didn't look too stiff and could still effectively emote. This obsession with detail extended to every aspect, from the caustic lighting on the ocean floor to the individual movements of each species' fins.
